DIY SOS viewers left in tears as the mother-of-four was left an uninhabitable home after her husband tragically died

DIY SOS viewers were left in tears after a mother of four revealed she was left with an uninhabitable home following the tragic death of her husband.

Lindsey McAuley, 39, from Kettering, Northamptonshire, met Shaun through a dating app in 2016 and the happy couple married three years later.

They had two boys – Leo, four, and year-old Zac together, while Lindsey had two children, Maisy, 16, and Hazel, 13, from a previous marriage.

On tonight’s episode of BBC One’s DIY SOS, Lindsey recalled how she and Shaun planned to build their dream home…only to have their hopes dashed in the most gruesome way.

She explained that they were planning on hiring a contractor to do the shell of the extension, but to save money Shaun wanted to do the interior work.

“He couldn’t wait to get started,” Lindsey recalled.

Plans finally got underway last September, but Lindsey shared how they were in the midst of renovations when Shaun fell ill.

“He just started with a urinary infection and then a little bit of lower back pain,” she said.

“When he first went to the doctors he felt fine. Then they found this mass and about four days after they found the mass, he got really bad pain and ended up back in the hospital.”

She continued, “At that point we didn’t know what the crowd was. A few weeks later we found out it was a really rare cancer.”

“It was just a huge shock because he was doing so well and he was so fit and healthy. He has never been ill.”

They removed it and they removed a large part of his intestines so he ended up with a stoma and they removed a kidney.”

Lindsey went on to say that shortly after his surgery, Shaun was dying to come home for Zac’s first birthday.

“He made it home and a few weeks later it was Leo’s birthday but unfortunately Shaun was in the hospital for it,” she said.

“Leo visited him in the hospital and unfortunately that was the last time he saw him.”

Shaun’s cancer had spread to his lungs and liver and the couple were told it was incurable but that he could have around 18 months left with chemotherapy.

However, a blockage in his stoma delayed the start of treatment, the cancer progressed quickly and aggressively, and just two days later Shaun died.

“One of the last things he said was, ‘I’m sorry to leave you in such a mess,” Lindsey recalled.

She added: “It was going so fast. One of the advisors told us he had never seen anything so fast.”

Host Nick Knowles was determined to give Lindsey the home she and Shaun always dreamed of.

“Shaun served his country,” he said. “He wanted to build this house for his family. He wanted to provide and protect.

“What we’ve seen is that everyone here is determined to pick up where they left off so they have a family home.”

Over the course of a week and with the help of local craftsmen, volunteers and some of Shaun’s old army friends, the stunning transformation was complete.

Delighted with the results, Lindsey gushed, “It’s an absolutely beautiful house.”

“Shaun would be absolutely blown away by how beautiful it is. He would have loved it. It’s open, airy, comfortable and cozy.”

And unsurprisingly, fans burst into tears after the episode.

“Inspirational, amazing, beautiful and deeply emotional – such a deserving family,” wrote one.

A second commented: “Tears are running down my face.”

A third added: “I’m in shambles,” while another wrote: “I lasted five minutes.”

Meanwhile, another wrote: “Another fabulous build and what a lovely family. I hope they have many happy years in their wonderful home.”
