From secret bars hidden behind nondescript walls to buildings with unique offerings on every level, we’ve seen an increase in choosing your own adventure locations in Perth.
There’s The Beaufort, a multi-level wonderland with opportunities to dine in style, have a beer and the game, sip cocktails on the rooftop, or try your luck at finding the Cypher speakeasy. Or a night out at Northbridge’s other venue, The Rechabite, could lead to a delicious Asian feast or a daring performance on the level above.
In Leederville, just a few steps or stairs separate hip new restaurant Servo from The Garden or new late-night spot Daisy’s. Then, just meters from there is Leedy’s newest two-in-one venue, Naber + IIII.
The bar, which is pronounced Neighbor and Four, is divided into a laid-back courtyard with a disco ball, while a stroll to the front reveals a more sophisticated space.
On a night as moody as the dark interiors, we opted for the front rather than partying at the back (although the courtyard is covered).
The food here is very, very good. The bold flavors of the four dishes we ordered exploded from the plate and the menu items are playful and unexpected.
You can’t go wrong with a quality grilled chorizo ($19), and Naber gets it very right, charring it to within an inch of its life before tossing it with a jalapeno relish and zing from a spritz of salsa verde adds more heat.
The deep-fried spouts ($19) are so good they could sway any Brussels sprouts boycott. Crunchy and balanced with the creaminess of the yoghurt, you can’t help but come back for more.
Shoyu Fried Chicken ($34) is a bowl of two chicken pieces — breast and drumstick — simmering in a rich curry sauce and sitting on a thick slice of pumpkin. The chicken is juicy and nicely marinated in a sweet and tangy soy sauce, but it’s the blistered squash with an almost brûlée topping that really pulls the punch.
The large roasted eggplant looked unlike anything I’d ordered before and was stacked high with mapo tofu and shiitake mushrooms ($31). It was tasty but didn’t have the wow factor of the other dishes and the plate wasn’t as clean as the others.
While we didn’t go back to buy a homemade watermelon cruiser — which is the perfect accompaniment to a warm day — it’s an exciting prospect to know it’s there.
Naber + III

The Verdict: Big and bold flavors, entertaining menu, and thoughtful wine and cocktail list. There are two separate venues, atmospheric and sophisticated on the inside and relaxed on the back – choose your own adventure!
