Dillard High School’s Steve Szoke inspires students to do robotics

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Local 10’s Tribute to Teachers campaign recognizes the best educators in South Florida each year, with just five honorees selected from hundreds of nominations.

Dillard High School’s highly acclaimed robotics teacher, Steve Szoke, inspires his students to get creative with coding.

Szoke has won a $50,000 grant from Amazon.com in numerous state and national competitions, providing opportunities for young engineers to thrive.

“Szoke is definitely a big cheerleader for all of us on the team, especially the women. He understands that the industry that robotics revolves around is very male-dominated and he wants to foster that environment where women can step up and show what they can do,” said his student Ciara Vazquez.

Teaching has been Szoke’s profession and passion for almost 30 years.

“In fact, I live over an hour away and have missed two days of work in a decade. That’s how committed I am,” said Szoke.

Lily Goltz, one of Szoke’s former students, nominated him because she felt he deserved recognition for all the great things he does for his students.

“I just think he deserves all the credit. What he has done for me and for all the students he interacts with is just amazing and life changing,” Goltz said.

Szoke is among a select group of South Florida educators recognized by the Tribute to Teachers campaign.

The recognition also comes with a $1,000 gift card from Publix Super Markets.

“I see this as a career path for our students. Whatever they do, they have to love it, so it’s a career and not a job,” Szoke said.

In addition to teaching at Dillard High School, Szoke has worked closely with an organization in South Africa to set up the first robotics competitive training program.

The training program has helped establish a robotics team there, with two more planned for this year.
