Devers backs Pivetta’s strong start as Red Sox with 6-1 win over A – Boston News, Weather, Sports

BOSTON (AP) — Rafael Devers hit a three-run homer, Nick Pivetta threw eight strong innings and the Boston Red Sox defeated the collapsing Oakland Athletics 6-1 on Tuesday night.

JD Martinez also scored for Boston, who were back home after an 8-2 win on a West Coast road trip that started with a three-game win in Oakland.

The A’s, who lost 11 of 12 on Tuesday, fared no better in Boston. Oakland were just two hits clear of Pivetta until Stephen Vogt’s solo homer in the eighth broke up the shutout bid. The only other hits for the A’s against the starter were Tony Kemp’s leadoff single in the fourth and Sean Murphy’s single in the fifth.

After starting the season 4-0, Pivetta (6-5) had five straight starts before ending his winning streak in defeat last Thursday at the Los Angeles Angels. He was back on form Tuesday, taking an early lead and driving through seven scoreless innings.

Pivetta allowed a run on three hits, walked two and knocked out three.

Boston hit a run in each of the first two innings, then Martinez homed the third down the middle for a 3-0 lead. Devers doubled the lead in the fifth, driving a 0-1 sinker from Jared Koenig to right center for his 15th homer of the season after Franchy Cordero and Rob Refsnyder opened the inning with back-to-back singles.

Koenig (0-2) finished the inning but was replaced by Adam Oller in the fifth. Koenig allowed six runs on nine hits and two walks. He hit two and committed a costly block with runners in second and first in the first, helping set up an RBI single from Bogaerts for the game’s first heat.

Ramon Laureano hit a deep fly to the triangle in midfield where Refsnyder made a jumping catch at the base of the wall in the sixth. On the eighth lap, Refsnyder hit the warning lane with a drive and Laureano retaliated with a jumping hold while still on the run.

Athletics: IF Jonah Bride made his big league debut, starting third base and batting ninth after being called up by Triple-A Las Vegas. He was shotless in three at-bats. …Oakland also voted SS Kevin Smith to Las Vegas.

Red Sox: LHP Chris Sale (ribs) was back at the club after continuing his rehab in Fort Myers, Fla. while the Red Sox were on a long trip. Sale said he feels he’s getting closer to making his season debut but isn’t quite ready. He is scheduled to throw live BP on Thursday and could be playing live in the minors soon after. “Physically, mentally, everything, I feel ready to start this process and get going and get back here fast,” Sale said. …OF Christian Arroyo was left out of the line-up just before the game due to illness.

RHP James Kaprielian (0-3, 5.73) gets the start for Athletics Wednesday night against a Boston pitcher to be determined before Tuesday night’s game.
