Derby: Man shot dead by police outside Ascot Drive station

A man suspected of carrying a knife outside a police station was shot dead by police.

He was confronted by firearms officers in a secure car park at Ascot Drive Police Station, Derby.

They were at the scene within eight minutes after officers reported seeing a man with a gun in a part of the compound that was off-limits to the public.

Derbyshire Police have now confirmed he was killed with a shotgun.

The man, who was not identified by investigators, received first aid at the scene and later died in hospital.

An investigation into the fatal incident to determine whether the deceased was armed is being conducted by the police station.

Gary Lloyd, who was near the station at the time, told Metro.co.uk: “I was just sitting in my van and I heard about 5 gunshots which were very loud.

“So I got out of my van and went to check but all I could see was a lot of police cars and vans.”

No other station staff, officials, or members of the public were injured in the incident.

A spokesman for Derbyshire Constabulary said: “At 9.55am today (October 7) officers reported seeing a man armed with a knife in the secure car park of Ascot Drive Police Station on Ascot Drive in Derby.

“Armed officers were dispatched to the scene and at 10.03am a police firearm was fired.

“The man, whose identity is unknown, suffered a gunshot wound and the East Midlands Ambulance Service have been called to attend.”
