Dedicated fans brave the cold weather to catch Battlehawks, CITY SC games

ST. LOUIS – It’s a big night in downtown St. Louis. Two different games attract people from all over the world, even in cold temperatures.

Tailgaters and sports fans bundled up in front of St. Louis Battlehawks and St. Louis CITY SC fans on Saturday. Although temperatures dropped below freezing, many thought today was a day for outdoor celebrations.

“We’re here to watch the Battlehawks game,” Hunter Blaes said. “It’s a bit cold outside but we’re excited. We’re here for a good game, hopefully we’ll come out with a win.”

Despite the Battlehawks game being held indoors, many had to prepare in advance.

“Hand warmers are definitely [need]’ Chad Christopher said. “Good food, great friends, and just trying to stay warm before we can go in the building.”

Cold or not, many home games in St. Louis will make downtown buzz. Tens of thousands gathered for both the Battlehawks and CITY SC games.

“It’s just good for business,” said Sam Lee. “It’s good to have that buzz around St. Louis and it’s just going to be a good weekend for St. Louis in general.”

One fan traveled all the way from Chicago to see the Battlehawks because he admired the city’s passion for sports.

“I like getting out of here,” said Ronald Weber of Chicago. “I like to buy season tickets, that’s a good reason to come. St. Louis is a great city.”

As Battle Hawks fans stormed outside, CITY SC fans at the Pitch Athletic Club & Tavern prepared to watch their team attempt a historic 4-0 start.

“We’re here with some friends celebrating St. Louis,” said Nick Magaletta. “Half of us go to the Battlehawks game, half to the football game.”

Some fans have been waiting for a long time to see a soccer team in St. Louis and are happy that their dream has finally come true.

“I’ve waited my whole life for this moment,” said Paul Tissier. “When it was announced three years ago that we were starting a football club in St. Louis, the passion that coursed through my veins at that moment was the most exciting thing that has happened to me in a long time.”

The city of St. Louis is excited for all of the sports teams in the area and can’t wait to see what the future holds.

“We have some of the best sports fans in the country, including with the Cardinals and Blues,” said Brad Morley. “If you add two more teams to this picture, and new teams at that, the whole town gets excited.”
