Debussy gets the ball back after moving to Taree

Taree trainer Tony Ball can’t hide his excitement about the future of lightly ridden galloper Debussy and expects the gelding to do easy work with a wide goal in Sunday’s Komatsu Wayne Glenn Pink Silks Cup (1213m) in Coffs Harbor.

The four-year-old has been just two starts at Ball for a first win at Newcastle in a Class 1 and a third game at Gosford in a Benchmark 64, so bumping him into the Country Open Company in his eighth start is a bullish move. But he’s confident Debussy is up to the task with a 6kg weight loss.

“I hope he agrees with me because I think he’s quite talented,” Ball said. “The 1200m won’t be a problem, he’ll be right behind the front… just camp behind them, peel and go. Luke [Rolls] works very well for me. He just lets him work it into his gaits and go through his gaits.

“I’m not Toby Edmonds or Chris Waller; I’m a country coach and I’m doing well at the moment. I have to hope that he can produce the goods and make me known.”

Toby Edmonds was Debussy’s original trainer and he was highly praised by jockey Robbie Fradd after his first win at Eagle Farm in April 2021.

He went straight into Group 3 for his second start but went into the wild after that initial prep until Ball was recommended to give the gelding a change of scenery.

“One of the owners, Bamboo Bloodstock, told me that this horse was worth buying and if I did buy it they would keep half and three quarters of the owners ended up staying with him,” he said.

“I called Toby and asked what the problem was and he said there was no problem, he just couldn’t get it back. His breathing was completely out of balance and the girls who work for me here did a great job of making him breathe properly.

“He won first at Newcastle and ran a good third the other day, it’s quite a smart horse, that horse that beat him.”
