Deaf school teacher throws 9-year-old disabled girl to the ground

A teacher at a school for deaf children is said to have thrown a 9-year-old disabled student to the ground.

Surveillance footage showed a teacher at St. Rita School for the Deaf in Evendale, Ohio, walking down a hallway and picking up a girl. In another clip, the Catholic school teacher holding the girl drops her hard to the ground, then dusts off her hands and storms off.

At the end of the video, a man can be seen watching in disbelief.

The victim’s mother, Alexys Wells, claims it was no accident.

“Any way you look at it, it’s very obvious that this was a malicious act,” she told the WCPO.

“When I first saw the video, I was so outraged that I had to take a minute. I was completely speechless, couldn’t really focus on what I wanted to say.”

Wells said her daughter reported the incident through sign language and reenacted the scene.

“She’s completely nonverbal, so the first thing she did was demonstrate what happened to her teacher,” Wells said. “She just kept saying, ‘My teacher threw me, my teacher threw me, my teacher threw me, she was angry, she threw me.'”

Wells said the school didn’t let her know what happened until the next day, describing it as only a “minor incident.”

The school president “said she was having trouble with the transition,” Wells said. “Because of her brain disorder, she has trouble moving from subject to subject or task to task.”

It was not clear what was happening in the classroom hallway before the episode.

The unnamed teacher was suspended. The school is overseen by the Archdiocese of Cincinnati.

“Any actions by a staff member at St. Rita School that do not demonstrate respect and dignity for the children entrusted to our care will be addressed immediately,” an archdiocese spokesman told the New York Post.

“The safety of students and staff at St. Rita School is of the utmost importance.”
