It’s a new low for United who will end a day bottom of the Premier League for the first time since 21 August 1992.
The painful result has seen Erik ten Hag become the first manager to lose each of his first two games in charge of United since John Chapman in November 1921.
De Gea made costly mistakes on Brentford’s first two goals and let Josh Dasilva’s easy shot creep under him after just 10 minutes at the near post.
He passed a poor pass to Christian Eriksen as the Bees doubled their lead, with the keeper putting unnecessary pressure on the Denmark international when he lost the ball to Mathias Jensen.
“I think I cost my team three points today to be honest,” De Gea said in a brutally candid post-match interview with Sky Sports.
“It was a bad performance for me. After the first mistake and the second… it was a terrible day.
“It can happen in professional football, the mistake I made. I should have saved the first shot and then the result would probably have been different.
“I shouldn’t have played the ball to Christian Eriksen. Of course we try to play, but they press all over the field. I should have read it better.
“I cost us three points. It was an easy save and it was 1-0 for them. We have to react much better and be able to score goals. It was a bad performance.
“In preseason it’s too easy when you’re playing for free. In these important games you need courage, you have to be consistent. That was not the case today and I have to keep working.”
When asked how United can reverse this, De Gea paused for a long time before adding: “I’m not sure. [All the] The teams are improving a lot and it feels like we’re in the same place.
Ten Hag, meanwhile, are looking to sign a goalkeeper who can challenge De Gea.
United are said to view Leeds United’s Ilan Meslier as the ideal long-term replacement but accept he is unavailable this summer.
