On his Anfield debut, the high-profile summer signing lost his temper 1-0 in the second half against the Reds.
The Uruguayan striker struggled with Palace centre-back Joachim Andersen, flicking his head back at the defender’s face.
The Dane was unimpressed and poked Nunez in the back, causing the striker to turn and land a clear headbutt in the Palace man’s face, which deservedly produced a direct red card from the referee.
It was an impressive result for Patrick Vieira’s side and a second draw in two games for Jurgen Klopp, but Manchester United hero Gary Neville believes Nunez’s idiocy was the main story.
“Tonight the story is Nunez,” Neville told Sky Sports. “Not just the second headbutt, but the first to try again.
“Usually you get together and there’s a little one, but he’s got it right.
“There’s no such thing at Benfica, he wasn’t sent there. That’s tonight’s stupidity. He’s a young player and it’s a steep learning curve for him tonight.’
Neville added: “It’s a moment of madness. You will feel that. That’s a real butt on the underside of the nose.’
Asked if Nunez’s red card was expensive for Liverpool, Reds legend Carragher said: “Hugely. It was a poor start for Liverpool in terms of points.
“I actually thought Liverpool excelled in the first half tonight in front of the Palace goal and how they reacted to going down to 10 men.
“Draws are now defeats. We know the bar has been raised by Manchester City and Liverpool in recent years so far.
“You’re making it difficult for yourself to catch one of the greatest teams we’ve seen in the Premier League. A really bad start to the season in terms of points.”
Carragher added to Nunez: “He failed himself, he failed his team there too. If he had been on the pitch, Liverpool probably would have won the game.”
Wilfried Zaha opened the scoring against the flow of play in the first half, with Nunez seeing red and the Reds still a goal behind.
Luis Diaz equalized shortly after with a stunning goal, but the home side failed to find the winner.
