Darthard, Aimaq leads Utah Valley through Washington 68-52

(Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune) Fardaws Aimaq (11) Utah Valley Wolverines center (11) scored 15 points to help lead UVU through Washington on Tuesday night.

Seattle • Le’Tre Darthard scored 16 points, Fardaws Aimaq added 15 points and 15 rebounds, and Utah Valley thrashed Washington 68-52 on Tuesday night.

Darthard hit two 3-pointers early in the second half to start the first half 15-4, giving the Wolverines a 54-39 lead with 7:49 remaining in the game. The Huskies took the lead for nine near five minutes but Tim Caesar responded with a 3-pointer and the Wolverines took a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

Caesar and Tim Fuller each scored 10 points for Utah Valley (9-3).

Terrell Brown Jr had 23 points, six rebounds and three steals for Washington (5-5). Emmitt Matthews Jr. get 10 more points.

Washington scored the first and didn’t take the lead again until Brown shot to give it a 24-23 lead in the third minute of the first half. Washington’s lead – and biggest by two points, was on a free throw taken by Emmitt Matthews Jr to lead 25-23. Utah Valley took the lead 7-2 to close the first half, then scored the first five points of the second half.

The Huskies, who continue to battle COVID-19 on their show, struggled through most stages of their home game. They shot 35%, missed all 11 3-pointers, 14 of 26 from the penalty spot and were 44-26 ahead. They had two assists, both courtesy of Brown.

This is Washington’s second game this month. The Huskies rescheduled a game at Arizona, got kicked out of UCLA, and canceled a game at Gonzaga because of COVID issues on the show. On Tuesday night, the Huskies were absent from senior striker Jamal Bey as well as assistants Will Conroy, Wyking Jones and Quincy Pondexter, who are on COVID-19 protocol.
