An emotional Pearce made the announcement at a press conference on Wednesday morning after wrestling with the call before telling the club she was hanging up the boots a week ago.

“It’s probably one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make,” Pearce said. “It was an emotional time making this decision. It was mainly because I had this feeling of contentment inside me. It’s a new feeling for me as a footballer.”

As she thanked her teammates, coach Mick Stinear, her manager Nikki Craig and members of Melbourne’s AFLW program, she admitted the joy of winning the flag and the connection she had with the group had made them flirt with the idea of playing on an attempt to go back to back.

Pearce said she’s looking forward to spending more time with her family, husband Ben O’Neill and twins Sylvie and Roy. She said that while juggling family life and AFLW presented challenges, the special moments they shared made it worthwhile.

“It was challenging at times but I think that’s the greatest reward,” said Pearce.

She said if she had continued playing she would not have been able to meet her personal standards of “110 percent” and that took her decision into account. However, she knew that she would miss the football club and the environment it created.
