Daily Wire Reporter Quits Matt Walsh Over Transphobia

On Tuesday, drama erupted on the Daily Wire about his escalating transphobic reporting to the public. A reporter resigned, citing his attacks on transgender people. Matt Walsh, the right outlet’s leading transphobic expert, didn’t take the criticism too kindly, responding on Twitter.

The Daily Wire has devoted significant resources to targeting transgender people. For over a year, Walsh has made it his personal mission to dehumanize and vilify the transgender community. Last weekend, his colleague Michael Knowles gave a speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in which he said transgender ideology must be “eradicated” from society. Many took this as a call for the execution or outlawing of transgender people. (Knowles didn’t take this interpretation of his remarks very well.)

For Daily Wire reporter Christina Buttons, Knowles’ comment seems to have been the last straw at CPAC. Buttons resigned on Tuesday. In a statement accompanying her departure, she said she was putting behind the escalating attacks on transgender people by Daily Wire pundits.

Buttons wrote that she began her work at the Daily Wire understanding that adults going about their lives “keeping kids out of it” were exempt from his laser focus on the transgender community. She claimed that in the six months she was at the outlet, she worked hard to “get the truth across accurately” about trans people.

“But such meticulous attention to detail becomes meaningless when the company’s flagship entertainers and personalities speak impulsively and employ divisive rhetoric for entertainment and clicks,” she wrote.

She called Walsh and Knowles by name.

She described Walsh’s transphobic documentary what is a woman as “brilliant”, but indicated that his rhetoric had recently become too aggressive. Buttons specifically referenced Walsh’s recent segment, in which he attacked prominent transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney, whom he called “manufactured and lifeless” and “like some kind of human deepfake.” Buttons said Walsh defended his comments as “good strategy” to gather the base.

“This set off a race to the bottom, with other social media personas outbidding each other to see who can take more extreme positions,” she wrote. Buttons suggested that Knowles’ comments at CPAC were inspired by Walsh’s influence.

Some congratulated Buttons for taking a stand. “Thank you for distinguishing between caution in transitioning minors and dehumanizing speech against trans people,” @annbauerwriter commented. Others couldn’t understand how anyone could miss all the transphobia on the Daily Wire. “Did you just find that out?” wondered one.

Walsh wasn’t too pleased. He accused Buttons of being attention-grabbing, disloyal and not spending enough time “in this fight” to share her opinion.

“Leave if you want, but there’s no need to make baseless insults and question my integrity on the way out the door,” Walsh said wrote in a Twitter thread. “Maybe you control your ego and try to learn something. We have been here longer and have done more.”

Keys answered to Walsh for saying that she appreciates his work, including his “involvement in legal prohibitions in red states,” which presumably relates to prohibitions on gender-affirming care for transgender youth. But she also reiterated that she disagreed with Walsh’s approach, writing in part, “I’m baffled by your ‘strategy’ of not trying to ‘convince the other side.'”

Now right-wing speakers are taking sides.

Ian Miles Cheong positioned himself behind Walsh. “Seeing his integrity questioned because you disapprove of his tone means you don’t want to win and you want to approach the culture war with the same milquetoast approach that got us into this situation in the first place,” Cheong said tweeted.

Glenn Greenwald is Team Buttons. He praised her “thoughtful resignation” and criticized those who attack adults’ private choices, like Walsh did when he stalked 26-year-old Mulvaney.

“If you spend your time controlling adults’ personal, intimate choices — either through the force of law or through moral judgment — it’s probably a sign that you have deep unhappiness and uneasy uneasiness within yourself,” says Greenwald wrote. “Mind your own business.”

Buttons did not respond to an emailed interview request. She retweeted some comments from supporters.

Buttons also defended the Daily Wire and its reporters, but reiterated her specific issue with outlet experts like Walsh and Knowles.

“I’m going because I want to reach the centre-left, and lately I’ve felt that the inflammatory rhetoric of some of The Daily Wire’s figures has increased significantly, making it harder to reach that,” she said wrote.
