Customer takes over Hibachi Grill because chef took “too long”.

Many hibachi restaurants can be described as a form of dinner theater, but it’s rare that audience participation goes past someone catching a piece of roast beef in their mouth.

This is probably why a 12-second TikTok posted by user Shelly (@keepinupwithshelly) went viral, racking up 1.2 million views in one day. In the video, a man who doesn’t appear to be on duty at the restaurant stands at the hibachi grill and takes matters into his own hands. Someone off-camera tells him to “sit down” as he begins manipulating the rice on the grill with the metal spatulas.

Shelly wrote in the TikTok’s text overlay, “When the chef was taking too long my cousin decided to take over.”

TikTokers who saw the post reacted differently to the man’s actions. Several users on the platform commented that if they were seated at the same table, they would have been frustrated if they had seen someone who wasn’t the chef trying to cook their meal. “Imagine it was a different group at the same table. I would have walked away,” said one.

Others claimed they would have been embarrassed if they had been in Shelly’s place. “Yeah, you get left at home every time,” joked another.

In the clip, it doesn’t appear as if the customer working the grill did more than move spatulas through the rice, but some restaurants may have strict policies when it comes to handling food by non- employee goes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has a thorough list of recommended safety practices for restaurant workers, and many establishments follow specific protocols to maintain a good reputation with local inspection agencies.

As of this writing, Shelly has not updated her social media accounts with additional information about the incident. The Daily Dot has reached out to her via Instagram direct message for further comment.
