Customer shares “Life Hack” to save money while shopping

A TikToker recently shared a “life hack” for saving on groceries: marking produce items as cheap items at self-checkout. Her tip has prompted other customers using similar methods to share their own hacks in the comments.

In the video, user Benja (@benjabenja___) takes a bag of avocados and marks them as bananas at the self-service checkout. The avocados were advertised as three for $5 at the grocery store, but using the banana weight price came out to $1.32.

Some viewers reported using similar methods for grocery store discounts.

“I never pay for orange peppers, I’m color blind and they’re always green,” wrote one commenter.

“I also have to mute the self-billing voice or she’ll yell ‘put your BANANAS in the bag’ and I’ll get nervous,” said another user.

“Fun fact: The $2.50 apples look the same as the $0.99 apples,” added a third party.

Other viewers have criticized Benja’s practice, which could amount to shoplifting depending on the location of the grocery store.

“You’re beginning to understand why we don’t have those in South America,” shared one user.

“In Australia there are cameras on the scale and it sounds an alarm if you press wrong,” wrote a second.

“Yes no, my fear never could,” said another user. “My dad was once fined for forgetting to scan toothpaste – he literally had three bags full of groceries and they went through each one.”

The Daily Dot sent Benja an Instagram direct message to comment on the video, but received no response before it was published.
