Customer says male Instacart shopper chose onions for green apple

There is a theory among Instacart customers that male Instacart buyers are significantly worse than female buyers.

The theory is that male shoppers are more likely to simply say an item is out of stock than to search for it, misunderstand an order, or refuse a replacement for reasons unknown to the customer.

Several users on TikTok have gone viral after sharing a similar opinion. In one case, a user claimed a shopper told her frozen meatballs were out of stock and refused her replacement. When she got to the store the next day, the meatballs were indeed in stock and a staff member told her they were in stock the day before.

In another case, a woman claimed that after ordering a small quantity of cheddar cheese, a whole block was delivered to her by a male shopper.

Now another user with a similar complaint has gone viral.

In a video that has over 388,000 views, TikTok user Anastasia (@anabana251) holds up an onion.

“Reasons we say we dislike male Instacart buyers: This was a substitute for a green apple,” she says in the video.

A majority of commenters quickly sided with Anastasia.

“Yes I will quit until I get a wife,” claimed one user.

“They don’t even try,” offered another. “It makes me so angry.”

Others shared stories about the perceived incompetence of their male Instacart buyers.

“I once ordered a piece of strawberries and the guy replaced it with a single avocado,” claimed one user.

“I ordered ground turkey and they replaced it with breakfast sausage,” recalled a second.

“Once my friend got mini pumpkins instead of old tomatoes,” wrote a third.

“Girls I needed diapers and they didn’t have the brand they brought me,” said another TikToker. “What is my baby doing with it?”

While Instacart usually allows users to refund certain items, Anastasia claims that the shopper didn’t notify her of the replacement, nor was it flagged on the app.

“He didn’t activate the app he replaced so I can refund it,” Anastasia explained.

This led some users to theorize that there might have been another reason for the exchange.

“If it wasn’t on the app, he might have done a double batch where you got someone’s onion and they got your apple,” said one commenter.

“This happened to me once when I got someone’s Roma tomatoes and sliced cheddar cheese and they got my avocados and spring onions,” claimed another TikToker.

The Daily Dot contacted Anastasia via Instagram direct message and Instacart via email.
