Customer mocks State of Dollar General Store

Dollar General has come under fire several times over the past year over the state of its business.

Earlier this month, an employee went viral after asking management for help with his store, which was overflowing with inventory. In May, another Dollar General story caused a stir on the internet after a user filmed a place where it appeared that only one employee was in charge of the entire business.

Now, another Dollar General video on the same subject has reignited discussion about the chain.

In a video with over 268,000 views, TikTok user Alexis (@__mesmerizeyou) documents her attempts to navigate the aisles of the store. Many are too crowded to navigate.

In the comments, many users indicated that they experienced something similar at their own Dollar General locations.

“And I think it’s just in my neighborhood,” said another.

“So this is just the company standard and not just bad management,” shared a third.

“Reasons I’m not going,” suggested a fourth. “Like why you all took out the whole inventory.”

Other commenters gave reasons why Dollar General stores look the way they do.

“As someone who has worked at 2 of them – it’s not always a lack of staff issue, it’s a lack of hours that the manager can give to the staff,” claimed one commenter.

“From experience, it’s because it’s the one worker who basically does everything at the same time in the store and at the checkout,” claimed a second.

“I work at [Family Dollar] and so be it. They bring too much stuff that doesn’t fit on the shelves so they leave it there,” said another TikToker.

While the stores may be chaotic, that doesn’t seem to hurt the company’s bottom line.

“Net sales increased 9.0% to $9.4 billion in the second quarter of 2022 compared to $8.7 billion in the second quarter of 2021,” Business Wire said in August of this year. “The company reported net income of $678.0 million for the second quarter of 2022, an increase of 6.4% compared to $637.0 million for the second quarter of 2021.”

The Daily Dot contacted Dollar General via email and Alexis via Instagram direct message.
