Bringing groceries back to the grocery store because they don’t taste how a customer expected might sound strange, but with a business like Costco, anything is possible.
In the video posted by @generationalchange on TikTok, she returns a rainbow cake that she says tastes like masa, a cornmeal used to make items like tamales.
“I’m on my way to return this disgusting cake I got at Costco,” says the TikToker. “To be honest I’m a bit embarrassed because I never send groceries back. That is my first time. But shoot, for $17.79 you best think I’m going to drag my ass to Costco and ask for a refund.”

Wholesaler Costco has a 100% satisfaction guarantee with a few exceptions for items such as electronics, diamonds, cigarettes, alcohol. Under this guarantee, most items can be returned within 90 days for a full refund with receipt.
In the video, as @generationalchange returns the cake, a cashier asks what’s wrong with the cake, to which she says it’s “not good at all.”
“So they gave us the money back,” she says. “I was a bit surprised that she asked me what was wrong with that, but I told her it wasn’t good at all. Got my money back, was a bit embarrassed. I’ve never done that before.”
Some commenters felt that returning the cake was a step too far due to its taste, prompting the buyer to “take your L”.
“Hell no I never would,” wrote one commenter. “I could understand if it was spoiled, but just because you don’t like the taste, no.”
“Omg no I could never… for that reason?” wrote another commenter. “Yes, no, you should be embarrassed… so many things I don’t like, but well, just don’t buy again.”
However, others encouraged the woman, claiming it was nothing to be ashamed of.
“Never be ashamed of this, this is some extra money to save for your family,” wrote one commenter.
“Before inflation I would have been embarrassed but fast forward to now…hell no!” said another. “Kudos to you, girl! Times are tough!”
Another shopper said he “always see people returning groceries to Costco.”
“I don’t know why people are tripping, this is a big company,” said one user. “Get your money back if you don’t like it you shouldn’t have to keep it.”
