A popular content creator went viral after sharing her disappointment at a trending hack, a free Starbucks “Cafe Misto” latte, sparking debate.
TikToker Kelly Gooch (@_kellygooch) shared her attempt at ordering a free Starbucks latte by purchasing a Cafe Misto with Starbucks Rewards and adding espresso shots, milk or syrup at no additional cost.
“Everyone says, you know, if you switch milk, add a shot, add a flavor, whatever, it tastes like a latte,” says Gooch. “So I tried today.”
Co-creator Lyell (@lyellgirl) originally posted the tip in a viral video with over 7.5 million views. Lyell suggests viewers redeem a Cafe Misto for just 50 stars and then adjust the drink to taste more like a latte. A drink requires 150 stars to be redeemed through the chain’s rewards program.
However, Gooch claims the hype surrounding the hack is misleading.
“It doesn’t taste like a latte,” she says. “In my opinion, it’s actually not very good.”

The video was viewed over 219,000 times as of Wednesday, and many people agreed the hack didn’t taste like latte.
“Yes! Tried it for the 1st time today. No way is it the same,” agreed one viewer.
“I tried it yesterday and it was disgusting. I’m convinced the people making this hack have never had a latte before,” shared a second.
“I tried that and it was gross,” said a third.
Others gave reasons for the drink’s different taste from a traditional latte.
“That’s because it’s a red eye… with frothed milk and flavoring. You get more caffeine when you add espresso, but with a sharper coffee flavor,” one explained.
“That’s because half of it is brewed coffee. If you don’t like brewed coffee, it doesn’t taste good,” added a second
“The Starbucks supervisor here tried to tell people that. Brewed coffee plus milk plus shots will taste extremely strong and NOT like a latte,” wrote a third.
However, some disagreed with Gooch’s opinion, claiming that with the right adjustments, the Cafe Misto was comparable to a latte.
“I made this with 2 pumps of praline and 2 pumps of toffee nut and found it tasted like a latte,” one person wrote.
“Did you add espresso? I just had it yesterday and it was so good!” a second said.
“It’s only good if you LOVE the taste of coffee and don’t mind mixing filtered and espresso,” commented a third.
