Customer Claims Walmart charges $7 for using shopping baskets

An unsubstantiated claim that Walmart is charging customers $7 for using shopping carts has garnered nearly 200,000 views on TikTok, where viewers are struggling to believe the claim.

The 14 second video posted by user @harajukubarbiesu shows her making that statement and cursing the company, but not much more.

“We’re in a freaking recession, folks, but Walmart, they took out the baskets and they’re charging $7 to use them, folks,” she says. “$7 to use a basket. Fuck you.”

It’s not entirely uncommon for grocery stores to charge a small fee to use shopping carts – Aldi is a prime example. The quarter-triggered unlocking of the grocery cart lock is so well known that customers have developed quarter holders to attach to their key chains to ensure they can always get a shopping cart.

However, since $7 is a pretty steep price to use a shopping basket, some viewers just don’t buy it.

“Post a video girl because no Walmart I’ve been to does that…let people see it,” one commenter wrote.

“Yeah no I need people to start citing a source if they’re just saying something ridiculous on Tik Tok,” wrote another user.

“I’ve never seen Walmart charge for the baskets,” said one viewer. “Where?”

Others just haven’t seen baskets at their local Walmart, just shopping carts.

“Your Walmart still have baskets?? I’ve been an accountant at one for five years and I’ve NEVER seen them,” one user wrote.

“What baskets?? The little ways?” said another. “I haven’t seen one like this in a Walmart in years.”

“Your Walmart still has baskets?” asked another user. “I haven’t seen her in a long time.”
