Cristiano Ronaldo turned down a request from Manchester United No.2 Steve McClaren to acknowledge the club’s away support following Saturday’s disastrous defeat at Brentford.

Erik ten Hag’s lacking in confidence conceded four goals in the opening 35 minutes as their unruly opponents pushed them into submission.

Ronaldo, starting for the first time this season, looked good off the pace and gave the ball up ahead to Brentford’s opener from Josh Dasilva who opened the floodgates.

The 37-year-old’s future has been the subject of intense speculation all summer and another humiliating defeat will only increase his desire to leave Old Trafford before the transfer window closes.

At the final whistle, Ronaldo could be seen chatting to United number 2 Steve McClaren, who appeared to be directing the club’s talisman to venture up to the away fans and applaud them.

Ronaldo, on the other hand, says that MENIgnored McClaren and stomped down the tunnel while the rest of his teammates at least applauded a group of supporters who could barely comprehend what they had seen.

The unity shown by Brentford, meanwhile, was in stark contrast to a disheveled group of United players who waved the white flag in the face of intense pressure.

Brentford’s press was spearheaded by Ivan Toney, who reveled in a United defense that never seemed able to withstand the physical attack they faced.

“The hard work and togetherness today showed what we’re about,” Toney said. “We absolutely deserved the three points.

“It doesn’t stop here. We have to play Fulham again next week and do the same thing again.

“It was just hard work. We knew the high press would affect them. It was clear to see that if you work hard you get the result.

“We know they have great talent there and have some players who can change the game.

“If you work like we did today and run over them all, you’ll get a result like we did.”
