Cristiano Ronaldo caught laughing as Man Utd thrash in Brighton
After Monday’s convincing 3-0 win over Brentford, United arrived on the south coast in a confident mood but were crushed by Graham Potter’s rapidly improving side.
Moisés Caicedo put his side ahead with his first Premier League goal after just 15 minutes of a one-sided struggle, collecting the ball on the edge of the area and firing a low shot through the legs of Victor Lindelof and past David de Gea.
Marc Cucurella doubled the home side’s lead just four minutes after the restart by firing a left-footed shot into the roof of De Gea’s net, and Seagulls fans were in ecstasy as Gross rolled through moments later to easily defeat United’s Spain goalkeeper.
The cameras quickly cut to an incredulous Ronaldo standing in the middle of the pitch, arms outstretched, laughing and gesturing.
Worse was to come, however, when former United striker Danny Welbeck ran through on goal and flicked the ball over De Gea and towards Leandro Trossard, who scored Brighton’s fourth goal on an unbelievable afternoon.
While United had to lick their gashes, it was a momentous day for Brighton, who celebrated their first Premier League win by four goals.
Summing up the emotions, Captain Lewis Dunk said: “It’s a special day. [Man Utd] are a top team and we have let our home fans down this season so it was a nice moment. Our form away from home was excellent, but not so good at home.
“It held us back in the league. They had to see some not so good performances but you can tell they enjoyed them.
“We’ve been waiting for it to come together; there were a few moments when I still screamed. I’m happy but never too happy. We’ll have a nice evening.”
