Cristiano Ronaldo is reportedly threatening to become a major problem for Manchester United as the veteran striker tries to reason with Erik ten Hag’s tactics.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has made it clear he wants to leave Old Trafford this summer to continue playing in the Champions League, despite receiving significantly less interest than expected, while United do not want to sell their top scorer past season.

Ronaldo was allowed to miss the club’s pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia for “family reasons” and was only fit enough for a spot on the bench in the season-opener against Brighton.

He returned to the starting XI in Saturday’s 4-0 win against Brentford but throughout looked dejected and frustrated as he turned down assistant manager Steve McClaren’s request to give United away fans credit after the game pay.

There have been reports that Ronaldo’s sulk is starting to affect the rest of the team as many players believe it would be better if the Portuguese superstar simply left the club.

Now The Athletic claim the wanton 37-year-old’s mood and demeanor has become so openly rebellious that he has attempted to argue against Ten Hag’s high-pressing tactics in training.

The Dutch manager’s style of play hinges on dynamic and diligent attacking, but pressing from the front and closing isn’t something Ronaldo is particularly known for or enjoys – even when he was in his prime.

Indeed, he was at times criticized for his lack of work last season despite topping the club’s goalscoring charts and appeared to fit poorly into the system of interim manager Ralf Rangnick, who also sought to engage opponents high up on the pitch.

But Ronaldo has been spotted in training flapping his arms around and pooping the high-pressing Ten Hag trying to coach his players.

The former Real Madrid star is reportedly becoming so isolated and distant from the rest of the squad that there have been times when he has lunch alone in Carrington, although Ten Hag has tried to get the players to eat altogether.

Despite his apparent dissatisfaction at staying at United, Ronaldo reported for training on Sunday after Ten Hag canceled his team’s planned day off and participated in any running exercises imposed on the team as instructed.

Ten Hag has previously dismissed suggestions that Ronaldo is unhappy or causing problems in training, saying last week: “That’s your assumption [that Ronaldo wishes to depart].

“It’s not what he’s telling me. So I deal with the players that we have and we plan with him for this season and we have to build him into the team so he has to come at the right level of fitness so he can do the job that we want him to do expect.
