A mother and her seven-year-old daughter have been hospitalized after being mauled by a German shepherd while shopping.
Vicky Rafferty, 35, described how she and her daughter Evie-Louise Mannion were attacked at the Gallagher Retail Park in Coventry on June 6.
She said: “We walked along and it literally just attacked my daughter Evie-Louise. It pulled her to the ground. Thankfully, she pulled her hands to her face, but she got bites on her arms — it’s a mess.
“It grabbed her foot and pulled her to the ground and bit her from her shoulder to just above her elbow. The dog just wouldn’t let go. I was pulling my daughter’s legs, anything to get her away from that dog.’
Vicky recalled the moment she had to kick the dog in the face to get it from her daughter.
She said: “I managed to take it off my daughter by kicking it in the face. I screamed, “Take my daughter away, take my daughter away”.
“He released her after four kicks in the face. Then it got me. I was on the floor and it bit me.
“It was a six-year-old German shepherd. The owner tried to pull it back on the harness but had no chance.”
Vicky has been bitten five times, including severe stab wounds on her hip and the top of her leg.
“I fought it on the ground,” she said. “I was wearing a thick, padded coat and it tore through.”
The dog was then locked back in the car after the owner managed to get him under control.
Vicky said she passed out twice during the attack and also suffers from herniated discs in her spine.
She and Evie-Louise were treated at the scene for their injuries before being taken to Coventry and Warwickshire University Hospital for further treatment and a tetanus shot.
As a result of the attack, Evie-Louise’s arm was swollen “like a balloon” and she was bitten seven times, resulting in a stab wound that exposed fatty tissue.
Evie-Louise is deeply traumatized by the incident and has to go back to the UHCW ER for an X-ray due to severe pain in her shoulder.
Vicky said: “She doesn’t sleep well and in her sleep she cries and screams – ‘Mum, Mum, please, please’.
“She’s off school for a week, is on antibiotics and still has an open wound.”
The dog was taken away by a specialist policing unit from West Midlands Police.
But Vicky fears that it will attack other people in the future.
She added: “This dog could be back out there soon. I’m worried it might attack a child again, but next time it might be fatal.’
A West Midlands Police spokesman said: “We were called to the Gallagher Retail Park in Coventry on Monday 6 June to report that a child had been bitten by a dog.
“The seven-year-old and her mother, who suffered bruises, were treated at the scene by paramedics.
“The dog, a German shepherd, was confiscated under Section 3 of the Dangerous Dogs Act. An examination will now take place and the dog’s behavior will be assessed.’
