Starting Monday, hearing aids will be available on store shelves nationwide for thousands of dollars less than they previously cost.
They are available at stores like Walgreens, Walmart, and CVS both on the shelves and online.
“We think this will have a big impact, not just in terms of cost savings, but also in terms of the innovation that we’re going to see in terms of features,” said Hannah Garden-Monheit, the president’s special assistant for business policy. “We hope it will break down the stigma that comes from people who may be reluctant to not get hearing aids.”
In addition, prescription, examination and adjustment by the audiologist are no longer required. White House officials believe it could reduce the median cost by $3,000 per couple.
Ivonne Baixeras is a Licensed Hearing Aid Specialist who says this is welcome news in her industry.
“I think it’s going to be a game changer,” she said. “I’m all for it because at least they’ll get their feet wet and it might work for some.”
According to Baixeras, high costs and doctor visits have likely discouraged many with hearing problems from seeing a specialist and getting the hearing aid.
She also reminds that hearing loss doesn’t just affect hearing.
“It affects your memory, your balance, your interaction,” Baixeras said, adding that it can also lead to depression.
One thing to note is that even though people no longer need a prescription, Baixeras strongly recommends seeing a specialist for the hearing aid to perfectly fit the person’s needs.
“There’s no reason anyone shouldn’t still see a doctor, but from here on out you don’t have to pay several thousand dollars for prescription hearing aids, you can just go over the counter, which is potentially all you need,” said dr Frank Lin of the Johns Hopkins Cochlear Center.
