Convenience store employee says customer hassled her about sales tax

In a viral TikTok video, a supermarket worker tells how he was allegedly harassed by a customer about sales tax.

On June 1st, user @0liviamillerr posted a video detailing how a customer refused to pay taxes on a bag of chips that was worth $3.99 – which is equivalent to $4.51 . She recreated the incident by portraying both herself and the customer.

“I’m sorry but who are you to tell me how much money I spend or don’t spend,” the TikToker claims the customer said. “For example, if it says $3.99, I’ll pay that. I won’t give you any extra money for you and the owner.”

“Do you want it or not? I’m not going to argue with you about taxes,” she replies.

The customer then goes on to say that they want the bag of chips for $3.99, the price excluding tax. The worker declines his request, pointing out that she has no authority to decide on sales tax or the pricing of products.

She says the client called it “outrageous,” before continuing, “How am I supposed to teach my daughter to grow up in a society where people like you take extra money from people like me?”

After more back-and-forth, the clerk encourages the customer to raise their issue with the store owner. “I have no control over whether or not you pay taxes,” she says.

After another prompt to call the chips tax-free, the TikToker claims the customer replied, “How am I supposed to tell my daughter you won’t allow her to get the chips she wants?”

When she told the customer that she was physically unable to adjust the price, she said the customer gave up and left.

At the end of the video, the creator added that her gas station doesn’t do tax exemptions.

The video has received over 80,000 views and many viewers have been shocked by the behavior of the customers.

“POV: Yes, I am solely responsible for the government,” joked one user.

“Have you just not bought anything in your whole life? has it always worked like this?” another asked.

“Tell me you can’t afford the bag of chips without telling me you can’t afford the bag of chips,” speculated a third viewer.

Others have reported similar experiences, with customers complaining about the cost of items they have no control over.

“Every day at my job. They’re complaining because the prices are going up like I have some control over it,” one user wrote.

“When people bother me at work over a minor (cents!) price dispute, I just walk around the store and pick up loose change off the floor for them,” another jokingly added.
