Conspiracy Theorists Blame Grant Wahl’s Death on COVID Vaccine

Last week, famed football journalist Grant Wahl tragically died while covering the World Cup. On Wednesday, his family announced that Wahl died from a ruptured blood vessel leading to his heart. Wahl had just turned 49.

Conspiracy theorists are convinced Wahl’s death was caused by the COVID-19 vaccine, a constant refrain in recent years. Anti-vaccinationists have sought to attribute the premature deaths of those who were vaccinated to vaccination.

Theories about Wahl’s death are circulating on the internet.

As supposed evidence, most point to two facts: Wahl was vaccinated; and his widow, Dr. Celine Gounder, was a member of President Joe Biden’s COVID-19 Advisory Council Transition Team.

One Gab user opined, “I’m sure he was boosted with this woman [a] Tea.”

“Grant Wahl has been chattered and his wife works for Biden on the Covid Advisory Board,” read a Telegram post that was viewed 17,000 times. “He ‘died suddenly’.”

“Another #DiedSuddenly,” the covert Patriot Voice Telegram channel wrote after Wahl’s death. The hashtag refers to the anti-vaccination “documentary”. Died suddenly. Patriot Voice’s post included several needle emojis.

Many of the posts claim that Wahl’s death was also caused by the vaccine called the phrase “died suddenly” in an apparent nod to the pseudo-documentary.

Died suddenlywho has been widely debunked also attempted to link Wahl’s death to the vaccine by posting a screenshot of his April 2021 tweet about receiving his first round of the vaccine.

Others promoting the conspiracy theory similarly alluded to Wahl’s December 2021 tweet about a booster shot. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cases of myocarditis and pericarditis that have developed after vaccination occur within a week of receipt.

There are no reports of Wahl receiving any booster shots ahead of his trip to the World Cup.

dr Gounder has denied any link between her husband’s death and either COVID or the vaccine. Before his collapse during a World Cup game, Wahl had symptoms typical of the virus, but allegedly tested negative for it.

In a statement released Wednesday morning on Wahl’s Substack, Dr. Gounder: “His death had nothing to do with COVID. His death was unrelated to vaccination status. There was nothing shameful about his death.”

In rare cases, COVID vaccines have been linked to myocarditis and pericarditis, two types of inflammation of the heart and surrounding tissues. The type of rupture Wahl died from, known as an aortic aneurysm, is not among the known side effects of the COVID vaccine.

In conversation with the New York Times, pressed Dr. Gounder vented her frustration at people spreading unfounded rumors about her husband’s death. “I wanted to make sure the conspiracy theories about his death were brought to an end,” she said of the release of the autopsy results.
