There is a growing argument that college campuses overwhelmingly espouse liberal ideologies over more conservative ones. forbes cited a Quora Opinion article that said liberalism had become increasingly prevalent among university professors since the 1980s.

A A YouGov poll conducted in May 2022 polled about 22,000 people and found that most college graduates said they believe college made them or people they know more liberal.

It’s easy to argue that there are myriad factors that contribute to what “liberal” means in the context of this particular survey. Those who say they have become more liberal might be speaking in terms of their own mindset before they moved out of their childhood home/town and grew up with other people entering adulthood. For example, someone who came from a super-strict religious upbringing, where men and women don’t socialize without parental supervision, might describe themselves as more “liberal” after going to college and attending mixed-gender parties.

Whether or not a “secret liberal agenda” presiding over universities is true, there are likely many college students who will attest to the effectiveness of using resources like ratemyprofessors.com to guide students down the path of least interest To offer resistance as painlessly as possible on the way to graduation.

Sometimes users on the platform urge fellow students to simply parrot their professors’ ideologies to avoid “rocking the boat” — something one TikToker claims he did to pass all of his college classes.

The clip above begins with a student speaking a few lines Ferris turns blue with a text overlay that reads, “Pretending to be a liberal on all my assignments to pass all my college classes.” He tosses his glasses on the table after lip-synching: “Incredible. One of the worst performances of my career and they never doubted it for a second.”

The video was put together by another creator, user @tymetrius7, who says: “You want to know how I know this is wrong? And that anyone who ever says they’ve experienced it is lying? This is me in 2016 and parts of 2017.”

The TikToker then cuts to a clip of him wearing a Make America Great Again hat.

“I wore that damn hat to class every day,” he says. “I took a course called Peace and Social Justice Studies. As the name suggests, it was about peace and social justice. The teacher was a former German citizen and more antifascist than antifa. Basically, I submitted a Fox News version of a research paper on reverse racism. Because, you know, I was part of a cult. Kind of figured that was one thing.”

He says that despite being the “Carlson Tucker” of his university, the professor still gave him a good grade for completing the assignment properly.

“Nevertheless, I submitted this work and he said, although he doesn’t agree with me, I met all the criteria of the work and therefore received full credit,” he says. “So please don’t tell me you experienced this so you have to lie somehow. Because then I call you a liar. You’re just looking for something to cry about.”

Many people were struck by the TikToker anecdote, saying they were glad he “broke out” about being a conservative Trump supporter and no longer believed in conservative talking points like “reverse racism.”

“Hey, I’m glad you broke out if it’s man,” said one viewer.

“Damn, good to see you left the dark side,” added another.

“So there is hope for lost souls to be regained,” wrote a third.

However, there were others who mentioned that although @tymetrius7 ended up with a great professor who put his own personal prejudices aside, the TikToker’s unique experience doesn’t necessarily mean it was a universal one.

“You just had an amazing professor, I’ve had a lot where I actually had to pretend to be liberal lol… even at some public school spots,” wrote one viewer.

“Um, I don’t want to tell you that you’re wrong, but your unique experience doesn’t dictate fact to every university in America, and neither does this guy…” argued a second.

“So you refute an anecdote with another anecdote. Good job!” Another user commented.

Then there were those who mentioned that they had never once experienced faculty bias during their school years, with some people claiming to be professors similarly rating by rubric, not ideology.

“Did the same thing as a professor. Well written argument? You get the grade,” one said.

“So few professors discuss politics at all. It’s almost like the people who whine just aren’t critical thinkers, so they get bad grades,” added another.

“Also, the professors can tell when you’re pretending to think something because it seems artificial and superficial,” claimed one user.

“They just like to bully themselves. Never had a teacher who bothered about your politics, nor did he ask about it,” argued a fourth viewer.

The Hechinger report addressed faculty bias in a 2019 story, noting that “ideology has only a tiny relationship to college grades, researchers say.”

Robert Maranto, a professor at the University of Arkansas, was quoted in the article as saying: “To the extent that ideological bias exists, it has a very modest impact. Although some students fall victim to unconscious grading bias, our results suggest that academic readiness is a far more important indicator of success than students’ political views.”
