A mother of three young children who were found unconscious on a Coney Island beach has been charged in their drowning deaths.

Erin Merdy, 30, was arrested and charged on Wednesday, two days after her three kids were found unresponsive near the water at the popular Brooklyn boardwalk early Monday.

Police have identified her children as Oliver Bondarev, 3 months old; Liliana Merdy, 4; and Zachary Merdy, 7. All of their deaths were ruled homicides by drowning on Tuesday by a New York City medical examiner’s office.

The mother has been charged with three counts of second-degree murder, three counts of depraved indifference to human life and three counts of murder with the victims under the age of 11.

Police received a call shortly before 2am on Monday for an urgent check on Merdy, as a family member believed that her children’s lives were at risk, according to authorities.

About 90 minutes later, cops found Merdy soaking wet and barefoot without her kids, at Brighton Beach which is next to Coney Island, Police Chief Kenneth Corey said.

Officers found Merdy’s children two miles away around 4.30am at the shore near West 35th Street. The children were pronounced dead at Coney Island Hospital.

Cops questioned Merdy and took her to a hospital, where she remains for psychological evaluation.

Merdy was ‘nearly catatonic’ when questioned, an official briefed on the investigation told ABC News. Police are reportedly examining whether postpartum depression was a factor in the alleged killings.

The mother did not have prior arrests or a history of emotional distress, according to police records. No evidence has been found that Merdy previously neglected or abused her children. However, Merdy was involved in harassment and aggravated harassment incidents that she did not ultimately face charges for.

Zachary’s father, Derrick Merdy, told CNN: ‘Anybody who met my son they would know that he is special.’

A former employee at a shelter for domestic violence survivors told CNN that the three children were always quiet and well-behaved.
