Commonwealth Games 2022: Gold in vault for Australian duo Maddison Keeney and Anabelle Smith

The story of redemption is complete for Maddison Keeney and Anabelle Smith after winning gold in the women’s synchronized 3m springboard final.

Four years ago, Maddison Keeney and Anabelle Smith sank while within reach of a gold medal on the Gold Coast.

But in Birmingham, the duo’s story of redemption came true when they finally added a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games to their roster after winning the final of the women’s synchronized 3m springboard.

Four years ago on the Gold Coast, the two Australians were favorites for the gold medal but ended up last when she retired on her last jump.

The pair led into the final jump, but Keeney lost himself in the air on the two-and-a-half front flip with two twists and landed awkwardly in the water.

“It was so hard to process because on the Gold Coast it was my fault,” Keeney said. “I never thought I would get it (the gold), I fought with my nerves a lot, so it’s special.”

The two Australians who won Olympic bronze played cool and rallied in a dominant performance – they finished with a score of 316.53.

They quickly showed that they were a class above the field, especially with their synchronization.

They almost broke the 50 point mark for their opening and reverse jumps and only continued to impress as the competition progressed, performing their 2 ½ inside somersault, their 3 ½ forward somersaults and finally their 2 ½ forward somersaults with one turn nailed.

“It feels sweet,” Smith said.

Yan Yee Ng of Malaysia and Nur Dhabitah Binti Sabri finished second with 299.85 points while Margo Claire Erlam and Mia Jolie Doucet Vallee of Canada took the bronze medal with 297 points.

The Commonwealth Games gold completes the medal haul for Keeney and Smith, but they still have big goals in mind.

“Olympic gold,” Keeney said.

The other Australian pair, Brittany Mae O’Brien and Fan Qin, finished last after a shock fourth jump ended their chances of a medal.
