A former soldier has stabbed a young couple in their home while their children slept upstairs, using the ceremonial dagger he was given when he left the army, a court has heard.

Collin Reeves, 35, is accused of murdering neighbors Stephen and Jennifer Chapple in Dragon Rise, Norton Fitzwarren, near Taunton in Somerset on the evening of November 21.

Reeves was embroiled in a long-running dispute with the couple over designated parking spaces in the newly built housing development, jurors were told.

On the night of the murders, he climbed over the fence separating their gardens and slipped in through the back door.

He then stabbed both of them “multiple times” in the living room in what was described as a frantic attack that lasted barely a minute.

The jury at Bristol Crown Court was shown a clip from the Chapples’ back door camera of Reeves climbing over their fence and entering through the back door.

A few seconds later, Mrs. Chapple is heard screaming in horror as Reeves yells, “Die, you f****** die”.

The clip was so harrowing that many family members of the victims left the court before it played.

Ms Chapple, 33, suffered six stab wounds to her upper chest and shoulder causing fatal injuries to a major blood vessel and her heart, prosecutor Adam Feest QC said.

She didn’t even get a chance to get up from the sofa to defend herself, he added.

Mr Chapple, 36, was found near the back door and also had suffered six stab wounds and three other minor injuries.

Neither of them had defensive injuries, Mr Feest said, indicating the speed of the attack.

The jury was told that Reeves, who was a command engineer in the British Army, has admitted killing the couple and has pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

He claims he suffers from a “mental functioning abnormality” and the jury was told it was their job to decide if that was true.

After the murders, Reeves climbed the fence again and called the police to tell them he had stabbed his neighbors.

Just days before the attack, Ms Chapple was the victim of a “particularly embarrassing verbal assault” by Reeves, said Mr Feest, who was caught on the victim’s Ring Doorbell camera.

The jury was shown a clip of Reeves approaching Mrs. Chapple outside her home on November 11, following an earlier exchange between the victim and Reeves’ wife, Kayley Reeves.

He accused Ms. Chapple of “making love you damn little bitch”.

The victim replies, “She’s the one who started this, just fuck off,” to which he replies, “What is that, you motherfucker, you fat bitch, you motherfucker? ** … shit shit.

Mr Feest said: “The right and wrong (of the dispute) may not matter, but it is clear that it was a source of stress that affected both families.”

Reeves also had problems in his own marriage, the jury was told.

In addition to the argument over parking, Ms Reeves had told her husband on the evening of the murders that she wanted a trial separation.

A tape recorder in her bedroom captures Mrs. Reeves apparently saying, “There’s only so many years I can take your shit,” the jury heard.

Ms Reeves told police he went downstairs in response, then came back up before going back down and then outside.

‘At that point she heard screams,’ said Mr Feest.

Mrs. Reeves called her mother and father-in-law when she noticed that the ceremonial dagger was missing from the picture frame where it was usually displayed alongside photographs from Reeves’ time in the army.

Mr Feest said: “Whether it was this parking dispute, tensions in the defendant’s marriage or a combination of these things that led the defendant to kill his neighbors is unclear.

“When questioned by the police in an interview about his actions, the defendant decided to exercise his right to remain silent.”

The jury was told they would hear evidence from two psychiatrists about Reeves’ mental health.

The trial, which is expected to take eight days, continues.
