Cody Gakpo has responded positively Manchester United would reportedly welcome a move to Old Trafford this summer.
The Red Devils are stepping up their efforts to sign new players ahead of the transfer deadline at the end of the month, with the Premier League opening weekend’s home defeat by Brighton underscoring the need for reinforcements.
Erik ten Hag has long wanted to add a new attacker to his front-line options but met resistance when he tried to bring in Brazilian winger Antony from Ajax.
There have been suggestions the Eredivisie champions would only accept an offer in the region of £80m, meaning United’s efforts to bring in a winger have been sidelined while they focus on more urgent positions – like the midfield.
But the game against Brighton highlighted the need for a new attacker as Ten Hag was forced to use Christian Eriksen as a false nine due to Anthony Martial’s injury and Cristiano Ronaldo’s lack of sharpness.
United have now turned to another Eredivisie talent to bolster their ailing front, with Gakpo, the young PSV Eindhoven striker, the player they have been targeting.
Reports surfaced on Tuesday claiming United were preparing a £35million move for the 23-year-old – and they are likely to face significantly less opposition than other targets they have pursued this summer.
Although the Red Devils are yet to enter into formal talks with his representatives, there are no fears he would prefer to stay at PSV ahead of this winter’s World Cup, where he has a guaranteed starting spot.
United have already missed Jurrien Timber after the Dutchman felt his place in the Netherlands squad for Qatar could be jeopardized by a move to the Premier League, as Louis van Gaal warned his charges they need to play regularly.
That doesn’t seem to be a problem for Gakpo, who would like to work under Ten Hag, although the United boss sees his compatriot more as a versatile squad option capable of playing at the front line.
Interestingly, Gakpo – who plays mostly left wing for PSV but is also capable down the middle – is represented by Dutch agency SEG, who also advise Ten Hag.
PSV are ready to accept an offer in the region of £35m – less than half of what Ajax asked for Antony – although United are not the only Premier League side interested in Gakpo, with Arsenal among the clubs , which are also associated with switching, is not the only one.
