Clover Moore rules out using drones instead of fireworks

A review commissioned by the City of Sydney, which the council would not release publicly, citing business confidentiality reasons, found that it would take 6,500 drones to produce a show of roughly the same magnitude as the harbor’s New Year’s fireworks display.

“Also, the show would need to be shorter and there would be a much greater risk of it being canceled at the last minute as drones are more vulnerable to adverse weather events such as strong winds and cannot fly in the rain. ‘ said a community spokesman.

This year, the pyrotechnic display with more than 100,000 individual effects will cost $5.8 million and consume seven tons of firecrackers.

The council said the emissions caused by the fireworks were offset and the council was constantly looking at other ways to reduce the greenhouse gases released by the event.

“Also, while the direct emissions from drones are lower than those from fireworks, it is unclear what the indirect emissions from drones in product manufacturing, importation and longevity would be,” it said.

“As such, we believe Fireworks Sydney still offers the best bang for our buck for the New Year’s Eve celebration.”

Moore said the fireworks brought more than a million people to the shores of Sydney Harbour, 425 million people around the world saw the show and it contributed $280 million to the NSW economy.

“Fireworks are still the most spectacular, economical and egalitarian entertainment the city can offer, but we’re always looking for new ideas and technology to enhance the event and make it the premier NYE local and global celebration.” , she said.

Numerous cities in Colorado in the US have stopped staging fireworks in favor of drone shows for the Fourth of July celebrations after the pyrotechnics sparked bushfires.

Earlier this year, the ski resort of Vail, Colorado commissioned a company to create a Statue of Liberty-shaped drone exhibit for spectators this year, complete with 200 drones, with music replacing the sound of booming fireworks.
