An IT worker’s PSA on the importance of clearing your browsing history at work has gone viral with over 53,000 views.
TikToker Cellini Denerio (@theceelife) posted the video to the social media platform this week, and viewers seemed to resonate immediately.
In the video, Cellini leans forward and speaks directly into the camera. “I just wanted to give you a tip from Corporate America,” he says, explaining that it came from someone who works in his company’s IT department.
“Please listen to me,” Cellini appeals to his viewers. “If you’re looking for something at work, always do it incognito or, you know, in a private window.”
Well, there’s nothing more embarrassing than having your personal search history pop up when you least expect it, so Cellini makes an excellent point with this simple tip. But he has more important information to share.
@theceelife90 CLEAR YOUR BROWSER HISTORY EVERY DAY!!!! I promise you will thank me later! Even better, just watch it on your phone!! #corporate #corporatetips #corporateamerica #jobsafety #cya #worklife #corporatebaddie #informationtechnology #itdepartment #it #vlog ♬ SUMMER RENAISSANCE – Beyoncé
“Even if you do it in a private window,” he says, “every time you clear your browsing history at the end of your shift. Every time you clock out, you have to clear your history.”
“I’m tryna save y’all for telling you I work in IT and there are certain things we can do,” says the TikToker. According to Cellini, if a company wants to know an employee’s browsing history, it’s extremely easy for someone in IT to find that information. “It’s not that hard baby, I promise you it’s not,” he says.
Cellini ends the video by telling his followers if they need to look up something unrelated to work, “Just look it up on your phone. Just cut out the middleman.”
In the comments, viewers wholeheartedly agreed with Cellini. The pinned comment even warns against getting too personal on your company’s instant messenger. “Acknowledged! Even as a former manager, do not use work IM as a personal chat/rant room. Managers can retrieve ANY message sent/received.”
Not only did Cellini like and pin the comment, he responded with another PSA video warning his followers about it. “STOP USING TEAMING TO KIKI WITH YOUR WORK FRIENDS! Text them honey,” he said.
Another IT-savvy TikTok user also warns that you can “delete anything you want BUT your browsing history is back[ed] on a server.” This user says that “One keystroke [and] I can make a report for your management lol.”
However, some users even got paranoid about using their phones for personal searches during work hours. “Can you still see our browsing history from our phones,” one asked. “I never do anything non-work related to work equipment.” Although Cellini didn’t directly answer the question, he enjoyed it and another user helpfully said, “I work in IT too. Do not use the company WLAN on your phone. Lawd please use your own data.”
The importance of clearing your browsing history at work isn’t new information, and many internet security companies like Norton go so far as to suggest clearing your cookies on a regular basis. Many users offered alternatives to using a work computer for personal web browsing in the comments. In addition to using your phone for personal searches, some users suggested purchasing a personal VPN if employees absolutely needed to use company WiFi.
However, not everyone seems stressed out by this information and probably won’t start diligently deleting their browsing history at work. “My IT spy knows my business. I didn’t gaf, I’m bringing up my story for you,” said one user. “Idc I will keep applying for jobs on her computer lol,” said another.
The Daily Dot contacted Cellini via TikTok comment.
