Garfield County Search and Rescue on Friday was able to reach and recover 15 “young men” and two adults from one of the county’s “most treacherous slot canyons,” officials said.
The church group hiked into Sandthrax Canyon Thursday morning and later fell into a trap. Search and rescue workers were able to provide those trapped with food and water that night.
Crews later lifted them from the gorge Friday morning.
Garfield County Sheriff Danny Perkins tweeted Representatives from the Ministry of Public Security, as well as a DPS helicopter and rope rescue personnel, responded to the scene.
One of four North Wash Canyons near Hanksville, Sandthrax Canyon is considered very physical and for experts only. Perkins told KSL that these four slot canyons receive more search and rescue calls than the rest of the county combined.
