Childcare workers are demanding a 25 percent pay rise

Providers are broadly supporting a state-funded wage increase, and late last year a network of centers called for a 10 percent hike in workers’ wages.

Goodstart Early Learning Advocacy Manager John Cherry pointed out that there are large disparities – in some cases as much as 30 percent – between the salaries of early childhood educators and teachers and their peers with similar qualifications working as elementary school teachers and teaching assistants work.

“We think there is a very strong case for the government to fund a boost for early childhood educators,” he said.

“If we are to meet the challenge of early childhood reforms, we need a lot more workers by July, and to attract them we need to pay them more.”

Labor Relations Secretary Tony Burke told the National Press Club there was “no doubt” that geriatric nurses would be paid significantly more this year because of the change in government, despite uniform industry criticism of the government’s proposal to increase wages for these workers increase staggered over 12 months from July.

He will meet with unions and business leaders next week to discuss industrial reforms the government plans to introduce in the second half of the year after criticism that the government did not consult enough on landmark legislation on secure jobs and better pay last year has.

This year’s labor legislation agenda includes reforms of the gig economy, an overhaul of laws related to the employment agency industry, wage theft and the need to address the major health risks associated with engineered stone.

However, Burke said the government is not considering repealing laws prohibiting unions from collecting fees from non-members for wage agreements brokered on their behalf, despite growing support for the overhaul within the movement, including United Workers Union national secretary Tim Kennedy.
