A teenage killer who raped and murdered a little girl was beaten so badly in prison that he “got his tooth stuck in his lip.”

Aaron Campbell, who killed six-year-old schoolgirl Alesha MacPhail in 2018, was hospitalized after being assaulted at Polmont Young Offenders.

The attack happened when his cell was briefly left open during mealtime, a prison source told The Sun.

Alesha’s great-grandfather George Lochrane, 79, said of the news: “I hope he’s in pain. I hope he is suffering.

“The only thing I’m sorry about is that I couldn’t do it myself.”

The attacker had to be dragged out of Campbell by guards as he delivered brutal blows, according to the prison source.

They said: “His door was open and someone saw the opportunity and seized it.

“He pushed Campbell onto his bed and started leathering him and got some good shots.

“Campbell didn’t expect it at all, he never said anything.

“He was taken to the hospital after his front tooth stuck through his lip.”

The attacker is now reportedly being hailed as a “hero” by fellow inmates and “ignoring” the fact that he faces fresh assault charges.

The source said: “Everyone in here is happy, staff have made sly comments that he deserves it.

“He’s usually kept away from everyone in here because everyone wants to hang him.

“They would kill him if they could for what he did to that little girl.

‘But there was a brief chance to get hold of him, and the boy took it. He could face a serious assault charge against him but it doesn’t bother him, he says it was worth it.’

Campbell is said to have lived in virtual solitary confinement and been too afraid to leave his cell since he was jailed for 27 years in 2019 when he was 16.

The sentence was later reduced by three years because of his age, but he will still be serving the longest sentence given to a juvenile offender in Scotland.

Alesha, from Airdrie, was on holiday to visit family when the teenager snuck into her house and snatched her out of bed in July 2018.

The depraved Campbell, now 20, then raped and murdered her, leaving her body on the grounds of a hotel with 117 injuries.

Judge Lord Matthews branded him a “cold, callous, calculating, ruthless and dangerous” person.

He warned that the killer would only be released if “a lot of work” was done to change him.

A spokeswoman for the Scottish Prisons Service said: “We do not comment on individual prisoners.”
