A tenant has been arrested after her landlord’s remains were found in a freezer in the house she rented.

Sandra Kolalou, 36, was taken into custody after Frances Walker, 69, was discovered at her Chicago home, which she rented to women in need of protection.

Police responded to a wellness check call at an apartment in the 5900 block of North Washtenaw Avenue Tuesday night after a tenant reported she had not seen Walker.

Police found a body cut into pieces in the freezer, and the Cook County coroner identified the remains as belonging to Walker.

According to police, Walker had served Kolalou with an eviction notice.

“This could very well have caused the defendant to become extremely angry and commit this horrific act,” said Chicago Chief of Detectives Brendan Deenihan.

Some tenants told police they heard screams around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday. The tenants who reported Walker missing said they were afraid of Kolalou and called the police about her beforehand.

Kolalou was charged with first-degree murder, with murder and a misdemeanor disguising aggravated assault involving a deadly weapon, Deenihan said on Wednesday. She appeared in court Thursday and a judge ordered her held without bail, according to the WLS.

Walker’s sister-in-law, Maggie Walker, said her family was shocked by the “barbaric act”.

“The kindest person you will ever meet, gentle, religious, plays at various Sunday services… just a great loss to the family,” Maggie wrote.

“She was also the sole caregiver to our older brother Stan, who is mentally challenged and lives in an institution. We don’t even know how to explain it to him.”

A neighbour, Cecilia Soto, said “it is utterly unbelievable that someone would do something like this to Frances,” reported the Daily Mail.

“She was too nice. That’s all I can say is that she was very nice,” Soto said. “She was always loving. She was very happy. She was always with her dog Lukey.’
