Second Chance Transplant
A father, Lawrence, is awaiting a kidney transplant. He gave one to his father 25 years ago and his only organ is failing. His autistic son, Luke, is the best possible fit when time is running out for him.
Dr. Blake pushes for surgery while Dr. Marcel hesitates upon learning of Luke’s condition. Blake felt that Luke couldn’t afford to lose his father. They took it to the ethics committee, who approved the decision to have surgery. They wanted to thoroughly test Luke for the match. In an attempt to get his blood drawn, he became very agitated and Marcel had an abortion.
Marcel advised Lawrence about an alternative treatment slow down his status, buy time for the donor list. Blake confronted Marcel about the treatment but he countered that it wouldn’t involve a scared Luke, adding that Lawrence agreed to that. She heeded him a warning that he might die while waiting…
Handle it delicately
Dr. Taylor was treating a teenager, Claudia, who was taking her mother’s weight loss pills. They suspect that her mother is abandoning her. She didn’t want to call DCFS in her teens and consult Dr. Charles for help.
They called her mother in and explained about the pills. She found them on the internet and gave them to her daughter as a measure to avoid being “the fat kid” because she was that girl when she was little. Consulting the mother instead of blindly calling child services is the best course of action.
do not know
Archer told Halstead about his spread in another newspaper as a whistleblower. Halstead defends that he doesn’t do it for glory but for justifiable patient care.
Halstead and Hammer treated a Haitian man who couldn’t speak English well, so his son Emanuel translated for him. The man had recently lost his balance, which caused his recent injury.
After testing, they determined the man might be suffering from early-stage Alzheimer’s disease. Emanuel’s father only cares about his fiance, Fabian, going to the hospital. Emanuel feels the best course for his father is he doesn’t know about his condition and let him remember what he can do now. Hammer and Halstead struggled to agree on his decision.
When Fabian arrived, Hammer came over and told her fiance her condition and that Emanuel wanted to keep it a secret. She is conflicted, but still agrees with Emanuel. Know will break the man.
Goodwin was pressed by the board. She received a visit from a compliance consultant, Dr. Randall Shintu, whom the board of directors hired to help massage the hospital’s image during the probationary period. He claims he is there to help for the benefit of his patients. She listened to him and agreed that the patient was paramount.
Before leaving, Shintu asked about Dr. Taylor and Maggie. Later, Maggie is questioned about their relationship and turns to Goodwin to worry.
Maggie was interviewed about the “appearance” of her daughter as the only medical student hired from her visit to the school. Maggie counters, Taylor got the job on her own.
Life for a life
Archer and Scott dealt with an injury and immediately transferred him to OR. After the surgery, he went back to the ED and started having problems. Before going back to surgery, he confessed he had accidentally murdered a man in a war a few years ago and was never questioned. He feels his condition (and possibly death) is his karma. He felt it was a reason to live a life.
The man suffered a severe stroke and died on the operating table. Archer lied to his family, telling them he wanted his organs donated and they agreed.
Archer authorized Marcel to Donating a man’s kidney to his patient.
Kiss & make up
After the fight, Marcel and Blake make up. He knew she was going to remove him from his transplant team. Blake thinks she likes him better when he disagrees with him. They agreed to save Lawrence’s life.
Avery (Blake’s daughter) runs into Marcel at the hospital and asks him out to dinner, but he politely declines.
Maggie has transferred her concerns to Taylor and she is happy that Maggie is in her life and always supporting her.
Halstead captures Hammer His days as a spy are over and Hammer asks him if he slept with Jessa for information. He completely denies it.
Charles took Goodwin out to dinner and Cooper happened to walk in. He approached her and told her of her crusade against him…
