You got that Stella Kidd! Chicago fire has been riddled with torrid romance throughout its run, but nothing quite compares to Kelly Severide’s relationship with Stella Kidd.
When fans first met Kelly (played by Taylor Kinney), he was a rough and tough firefighter known for being a womanizer. At the time he was brooding and wild while his later best friend Matthew Casey (Jess Spencer) was the softie that viewers were cheering for to find love.
Over the years, the One Chicago Diehards adjusted to Kelly’s whirlwind romances — including the time he got married in Las Vegas after losing his roommate and BFF Leslie Shay (Lauren German) in Season 3. The Arrival of Stella (Miranda Rae Mayo) in Season 4 shook things up.
The new character, who made her debut in 2016, left fans with many questions and even more hope that the leader of Squad 3 could find everlasting love.
Unfortunately, it took some time for Kelly and Stella’s love life to finally get back on track. They had to overcome jealous ex-boyfriends, overbearing parents, and work problems before they finally crossed the “just friends” line.
Through everything the ups and downsKelly always seemed certain that Stella was the one. In Season 8 Episode 4, the Lieutenant calmed down Stella after a creepy phone call about an infectious disease.
“Hey, I’m not worried,” he told her on the November 2019 episode. “I’m not going to do it that way.” When asked how things were going, he simply told Stella, “[As] An old man in bed with our children and grandchildren and you surround me.”
Throughout their relationship, Kelly almost lost Stella on several occasions, partly due to his stubbornness and the fact that he thinks he knows what’s best for her. That was the case in season 9 when she decided to ice Stella so she could focus on her lieutenant’s trial.
“I was MIA because I thought it would be best for you. Chief Conway told me the white shirts said you’re only moving up because you’re with me. I didn’t tell you because I thought it would mess with your head. You deserve better,” he told his then-girlfriend.
Stella fired back and asked if he thought she could actually handle being a boss. “Of course I know I don’t need your help with a test. I needed you to do what you do best: tell me, ‘You got that, Stella Kidd,'” she replied. “And picking me up when I’m down, and you shut me down instead. You turn me off like the bad old days.”
Her fiery response prompted Kelly to deliver one of his most memorable speeches about the series.
“That attitude of yours is exactly why I know you got that, Stella Kidd, and that’s why I know how much I screwed up and that’s why I’m never going to let you go,” he said to which Stella replied: “You are not the decision maker. And pretty soon we’ll be in the same rank, so listen up. I’m the one who’ll never let you get away.”
A season later, the duo encountered a tough time again, but showrunners Derek Hass teased in February 2022 that a wedding for the lovebirds was still in the pipeline. “We’re scheduled for a wedding episode this season. I’d write it down — maybe not in ink, but as close to ink as possible,” he said diversity, referring to newly engaged Kelly and Stella. (The couple married later that year in the Season 10 finale.)
Chicago fire airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
