Chicago Bears interview two former Dolphins for GM, inaugural coach – Twin Cities

The search for a new Chicago Bears general manager and coach includes individuals who have held similar positions with the Miami Dolphins.

The Bears interviewed former Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland and former Dolphins coach Brian Flores on Friday, four days after firing coach Matt Nagy and Ryan Pace, the team’s former general manager.

Ireland was the Dolphins general manager from 2008-13. During his six-year tenure in Miami, the Dolphins produced only one winning season and one playoff entry (2008), and that was the first year of his tenure. But during that season, former Dolphins coach Bill Parcells ran the football operations, hired Ireland and Sparano, and made all the staffing decisions.

Ireland took full control of the Dolphins’ office in 2011 when Parcells retired.

After being fired by Dolphins owner Steve Ross, Ireland spent a season as a drafts advisor to the Seattle Seahawks, and in 2015 he joined the New Orleans Saints as an assistant general manager. of the institution and director of college admissions, working for Sean Peyton, another patron of Parcells.

Flores, who was fired on Monday, left Miami with a 24-25 record over three seasons because of conflicts with Ross, Dolphins General Manager Chris Grier, and quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, among others.

But Flores is clearly one of the hottest coaching contenders of this cycle, also drawing interest from the New York Giants and Houston Texans coach openings.

After a seven-game losing streak that sent the Dolphins into the 1-7 hole, the Flores’ Dolphins hit seven straight wins and won eight of their last nine to finish 9-8.

Flores, who is respected for his defensive background, produced the franchise’s first consecutive winning season since 2002-03. However, his offense is often troubled.

During Monday’s press conference, George McCaskey, the Bears’ president, said that the Bears would consider hiring a head coach before hiring a general manager if the head coach candidate warrants it.

Chicago interviewed the Browns’ Vice President of Player Human Resources, Glenn Cook, a graduate of Hollywood’s Chaminade-Madonna Prep School and the University of Miami, the Bears’ Assistant Director of Human Resources, Champ Kelly, the Football’s Executive Director of Soccer.
