Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku has told Inter Milan that he is willing to take a significant pay cut in order to return to the Italian club this summer.

The 29-year-old forward is reportedly looking for a departure from Stamford Bridge after a difficult season at the club, having returned from Inter last year.

When Lukaku signed for the Blues for £97.5million, he received a sizeable increase in the salary he was earning in Italy.

However loud Daily Mail, the Belgian is open to reducing his wages to £125,000 a week – the equivalent of a cut of £3million a year – to secure a return to the San Siro.

The report goes on to say that any transfer would likely be a loan deal as Inter cannot afford a hefty financial package.

It is not known if Chelsea would be interested in letting Lukaku go temporarily, which could result in the club increasing his salary.

He scored just eight goals in the Premier League last season and fell out of favor with Thomas Tuchel.

With Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger looking to leave the club, many of Chelsea’s transfer plans have focused on defensive reinforcements.

However, their struggles in front of goal in the second half of last season have prompted Tuchel to target new strikers.

The German has been linked with a move for Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich, with new owner Todd Boehly ready to invest in the squad.

Last month, Tuchel conceded he may have to break into the forwards market this summer.

He said: “If we stick with the group, we will try to solve it with these players. Is it necessary to bring more attacking players to the box to create more distraction to create more space for each other? We will ask this question.

“The numbers we’re producing from our attacking players don’t allow us to overperform and we need overperforming if we want to be closer to the top two teams.

“I’m not pointing fingers, I’m not blaming anyone, but we need an overperformance from everyone. It’s not an overachievement if we only have single-digit goals and assists.”
