Chelsea’s new owners have been in direct contact with Romelu Lukaku to clarify the future of the club’s record-breaking signing.

The Belgium international returned to Stamford Bridge last summer and was billed as the final piece in the Thomas Tuchel jigsaw puzzle.

Lukaku, who failed to make it in his first spell early in his career at the west London club, arrived in a record £97million transfer from Inter Milan 12 months ago.

After a brilliant start, Lukaku’s form deteriorated and didn’t seem to do justice to Thomas Tuchel’s tactics.

A controversial interview Lukaku gave to Italian media soured the relationship between the forward and his manager, who often turned to Kai Havertz in the second half of last season instead of favoring the former Manchester United player.

Luaku has made no secret of his desire to return to Inter this summer and according to that Telegraph, the new owners of Chelsea, led by Todd Boehly, will not stand in the way of the 29-year-old as long as a deal suits the Blues.

Already Inter Milan are said to have turned down the prospect of a season-long loan deal after Chelsea demanded a one-off payment of £20million.

However, Boehley’s relationship with Lukaku’s representatives, Roc Nation, could help ensure a satisfactory resolution for all parties.

The American co-owns both the LA Dodgers baseball team and the LA Lakers basketball team, which have done commercial and player-based deals with Roc Nation. Lakers Guard DJ Augustin is on the Roc Rosta.

Regardless of Lukaku’s future, Chelsea are likely to be busy in the market this summer as they failed to keep up with Manchester City and Liverpool last season, coupled with the departures of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen.

Chelsea technical director Petr Cech spoke to what is expected to be a busy summer on Friday: “I live on the phone! It’s going to be a busy summer. We will plan, prepare and try to be as strong as possible next season.

“I think everyone knows where we are in relation to the team. Of course we will try to strengthen the team.

“We want to do our best and be ready for next season. It’s going to be a tough season with a world championship in between, so we have to be prepared for that.”
