Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has given a big hint at the club’s alleged pursuit of Leicester City’s Wesley Fofana and underscored the need to rejuvenate its defense with a young defender.

With Thiago Silva (37), Cesar Azpilicueta (32) and new signing Kalidou Koulibaly (31), the Blues started the first game of their new season in the Premier League with three veterans in defense.

While Tuchel is happy to rely on their experience, he has stressed the importance of refreshing his options with young blood – like 21-year-old Fofana.

“It’s a lot of experience, it’s maybe a different age, it’s a lot of experience and they have their quality and they know what they’re doing,” said Tuchel after Chelsea’s 1-0 win over Everton.

“We also have to make sure that we can take on a new generation in the next few years, but the lads are strong, so they are under contract and the lads have our confidence.

“There has to be [balance]. I think it is necessary. The game in general is very physical and demands a lot. This is the situation. We knew beforehand.

“Azpi is the legend he is, Thiago is still very important to us at the moment and when we had the chance to sign Kalidou we did it because we think he has a few years ahead of him.

“But in general it’s the fact that the goalkeeper and the double sixes are in their 30s and that’s what it is.

“Pace is an issue and speed is an issue. That’s what the game is all about with all signings, that you can play one-on-one, that you can defend space with high-speed runs if necessary.”

Leicester are adamant Fofana is not for sale and will require an offer of up to £85m to convince the Foxes to sell.

Chelsea, on the other hand, were rather unconvincing in their narrow win over Everton – secured by a Jorginho penalty – and Tuchel believes that was partly due to the lack of fitness of his full-backs.

He continued: “Our formation is a deep formation because the center of the formation is in the three centre-backs and the two No 6s, so it’s a deep formation where you rely heavily on the two full-backs.

“Today we played with Ben Chilwell, who wasn’t 100 percent ready for me, but the situation with Marcos Alonso [soon to leave for Barcelona] and the late signing of Marc Cucurella made it necessary for us to take the risk.

“Recee [James] is also struggling to be full, full fitness at the moment so we didn’t have enough of the full-backs on the right flank to give the inner players a little more freedom.
