The Premier League board have approved Todd Boehly’s consortium to complete the takeover of the west London club and the sale is expected to close shortly, ending restrictions in place since Roman Abramovich was sanctioned.
Tuchel has stressed to the club’s new owners that they need to strike quickly and decisively in the transfer market to close the gap with the leaders and Boehly is ready to back his manager.
While defense is the area Tuchel will prioritize first, the Germany manager is keen to improve his attacking options and is targeting a move for City winger Sterling.
The England international has just one year left on his contract at Etihad and has previously hinted he could leave the club after being a marginal figure in the first half of the season.
While Sterling played a more prominent role in the second half of the campaign, City will look to cash in if he refuses to commit to a new deal.
The 27-year-old is yet to make a final decision on his future but is aware he will fall further down the pecking order following the arrival of Erling Haaland.
Tottenham and Arsenal are also interested in Sterling, although he would prefer a move to Chelsea over north London clubs and feels they are a more attractive team.
Funds for Sterling’s signing could be raised through the sale of Chelsea’s misfiring attackers, with Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic all potentially available if the right offer comes in.
For now, however, Tuchel’s main priority is getting the defense in order as the departures of Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger leave the club incredibly few options in defense – while Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso could both leave as well.
Sevilla defender Jules Kounde is Chelsea’s top target for the right centre-back role and a deal should be fairly straightforward given the Spanish side need to sell and a lot of groundwork was done last summer.
On the left side of the back three, Chelsea are eyeing RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol, although it’s recognized they face stiff competition for the Croatian’s signature – with Spurs and Manchester United looking in that department – and other teams have had one are ahead of the Blues due to the club’s penalties.
