Inter Milan have proposed a ‘salary-sharing deal’ Chelsea for Romelu Lukaku, who could help the Blues fund a move for Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski.
The Italians are keen to re-sign Lukaku, who left the club for Chelsea in a record £97million transfer last summer.
However, Inter are unwilling to pay the same amount to re-sign Lukaku and would require Chelsea to drop their price significantly if they want to sign the Belgian on a permanent basis.
Instead, the Italians are considering a loan deal for Lukaku that would see them pay about a third of Lukaku’s £325,000-week wages.
This would be combined with a loan fee that could potentially be as high as £20million, according to the Sun. That would effectively serve as a down payment on a permanent deal in Lukaku in 2023.
Chelsea have struck similar deals for Diego Costa and Alvaro Morata in recent years when it became clear they would struggle to sack the forwards permanently.
While Chelsea would still have to pay around £200,000 a week to keep Lukaku, Inter’s payment would more than cover his salary and give Thomas Tuchel the leeway to choose another striker.
The German’s first choice is Bayern star Lewandowski, who has made it clear he wants to leave the Bundesliga giants.
Although Barcelona remain the Pole’s preferred target, the La Liga giants are in desperate financial straits and need to sell before they can buy.
Chelsea would have no such problem and Todd Boehly’s consortium are looking for a superstar to lead the club’s new owner.
