The left-back is believed to be Xavi’s first choice to act as cover and competition for Jordi Alba and Barca had hoped to land the 31-year-old at a reduced price.
Chelsea are believed to be ready to sell Alonso but first want to secure a new left-back of their own to compete with Ben Chilwell for a first-team spot.
A €10m (£8.5m) fee has been mooted, which seems reasonable for a player of Alonso’s experience.
But Barcelona are keen to negotiate an even lower fee, especially as the Spaniard has just one year left on his contract – although, like Cesar Azpilicueta last season, another year could be triggered based on appearances.
Now, Mundo Deportivo report that both Barca and Alonso are frustrated with Chelsea’s attitude and the veteran defender is ready to push through a move.
Alonso has no intention of staying at Stamford Bridge for another year and wants to return to Spain to be closer to his family with Barca, the club he dreams for.
But so far Chelsea have put “obstacles” in his way to prevent that move and he is now ready to consider a transfer request.
Although a year-long renewal clause could be triggered next season, Alonso doesn’t expect to make the required number of appearances and effectively finds himself in the final year of his contract.
Alonso thoroughly enjoyed his time at Chelsea, won a ton of trophies and would prefer to leave the club on good terms.
But he’s ready to reconsider that stance if the Blues hierarchy doesn’t show more flexibility and is keen to return to La Liga.
For their part, Barcelona are unable to make an offer until their so-called financial ‘levers’ have been activated as the club are still unable to register Franck Kessie and Andrea Christensen despite signing the pair on a free transfer.
Chelsea, meanwhile, have a number of other transfer priorities which they will focus on first before attempting to bring in a new left-back – which would then open the door for Alonso’s exit.
Manager Thomas Tuchel is keen to secure a deal for Raheem Sterling as soon as possible, while also looking to add three new defenders to his ranks after losing Christensen and Antonio Rudiger.
