Labor MP Chris Bryant has released a statement that Chelsea boss Roman Abramovich is trying to broker a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine.

Last week, Bryant called on the UK Government to seize the Russian-born billionaire’s assets, including Chelsea, which he has owned since 2003, as part of sanctions against Russia.

Over the weekend, Abramovich announced that he would give up ‘the right to manage and take care of’ Chelsea, although the day-to-day operations of the club would remain unchanged.

It is now reported that Abramovich is trying to broker a peace deal in the wake of the Russian invasion after Ukraine contacted him over his Jewish ties in the country.

A spokesman for Abramovich told the PA news agency: “I can confirm that Roman Abramovich has been contacted by the Ukrainian side to assist in reaching a peaceful resolution and he has been trying to help since.

‘Considering what is at stake, we will ask for your understanding as to why we are not commenting on such a situation nor his involvement.’

But Bryant questioned how Abramovich could have any influence in the negotiations between the two nations if the Chelsea owner is adamant that he does not have a close relationship with Vladimir Putin.

In response to the information, Bryant posted on Twitter: ‘This is like another lie by the Russians to avoid punishment.

‘If he is so close to Putin that he can exert such influence, if he visited Putin last week, then he should be punished now.

‘Really? It doesn’t just mean peace Russia withdraws troops? ‘

Meanwhile, Ukrainian film producer Alexander Rodnyansky revealed that Abramovich is ‘trying to rally support’ for peace talks but says the 55-year-old’s influence is ‘limited’. ‘.

Rodnyansky said: “I can confirm that the Ukrainian side is trying to find someone in Russian who is willing to help them in finding a peaceful solution.

‘They were connected to Mr Abramovich through the Jewish community and reached out to him for help. Mr. Abramovich has been trying to rally support for a peaceful solution ever since.

‘Although Mr Abramovich’s influence was limited, he was the only one responding and trying for himself.

‘Whether this has had an impact, I don’t know, but I’m personally reaching out to Zelensky staff and know they are grateful for his genuine efforts. “
