Chelsea are unlikely to be in contention for the Premier League title this season and their “pinball” approach to the transfer market has meant they need a striker, according to Gary Neville.

Thomas Tuchel’s men picked up three points in the opening weekend of the new season after beating Everton 1-0 after losing in their four previous visits to Goodison Park.

In a tight game, it was Jorginho’s composed penalty that secured victory after a foul in Abdoulaye Doucouré’s penalty, leaving the Blues eighth in the table after the first round of play.

New signing Raheem Sterling started in attack for the Blues, while defender Kalidou Koulibaly was substituted in the second half after picking up an injury in his first competitive game since joining from Napoli earlier this summer.

Marc Cucurella came on from Tuchel after signing the Spaniard for a whopping £63million from Brighton & Hove Albion just in the days before the start of the season.

Despite spending so much money this summer, Chelsea have missed out on some of their top targets, including Matthijs de Ligt and Jules Kounde.

For former Manchester United captain Neville, this scattergun approach has cast doubt on the team’s ability to perform.

“There are still questions about Chelsea,” Neville told Sky Sports. “Tuchel was a bit critical [in pre-season]. Maybe I’m doubting them too much, but I just feel like they’re not entirely smooth, not entirely satisfied. It feels like [the ownership change] was difficult for the team and the coach. You’ve had to deal with all of these events, so you feel a little less secure at Chelsea.

For Neville, Tuchel’s squad remains slightly in attack.

“The transfer strategy seems a bit like a pinball machine,” he added. “Your head is constantly moving and you’re not sure where they’re going to go next. They need a centre-forward.’

Chelsea’s season continues with a home game against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
