Mason Mount and Reece James have welcomed the arrival of Raheem Sterling Chelsea, who describes the former Manchester City striker as a “top guy and a top player”.

On Wednesday, Chelsea confirmed they had signed England international Sterling from Premier League rivals Man City in a £50million deal.

The 27-year-old, who has scored 131 goals in 339 games for City, has signed a five-year contract at Stamford Bridge.

Sterling, who won four Premier League titles at the Etihad, is Thomas Tuchel’s first major signing since Todd Boehly bought Chelsea from Roman Abramovich.

Both Mount and James have experience sharing a dressing room with England team-mate Sterling and believe the striker will prove a successful signing for Chelsea.

“A top guy. Such an experienced player, first class professional,” Mount said when asked about Sterling’s arrival in west London.

“I’ve been fortunate to play with him in England for the past few years where he has been managing the team for a time. He’s someone who’s been around for a very long time.

“He’s a top player and I’ve learned a lot from him over the past few years. So if he comes to us, he will only raise our level.

“He’s definitely someone who strives for high levels to win and that’s what we want. We want those players in that group who are really looking forward to him being here.

“We’ve lost some leaders and he’s coming in and he’s going to be someone who’s going to lead, a big presence in the group, a big personality. Hopefully we can win some things together.’

Blues defender James added: “He can be quiet and also loud but he’s great when he’s there and a top guy off the field. He will bring good energy.

“I don’t really have to talk much about what he’s doing on the pitch. He’s been at the top of the Premier League for the last 10 years and has won a number of titles so hopefully he can help give us some special moments too.

“It is a very exciting signing. He’s not a player who doesn’t have experience or hasn’t won trophies. He has scored a string of goals and provided a number of assists to the point that at the end of the day he has won trophies in one of football’s biggest leagues.

“Playing him is a nightmare so I’m pretty happy he’s here now and I don’t have to play him anymore!”

Sterling, meanwhile, says he is hungry to win more trophies at Chelsea after ending his hugely successful spell at Manchester City and joining Tuchel’s squad.

He said: “First and foremost, it’s a pleasure to be here.

“I’ve obviously achieved a lot in my career so far but there’s so much more to achieve and I’m really looking forward to doing that in a Chelsea shirt under Thomas’ stewardship.

“London is my home and where it all started for me and it’s amazing to now have the opportunity to play at Stamford Bridge in front of friends and family week after week. I’m really looking forward to meeting the fans there soon.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Todd, Behdad, the ownership group, Thomas and everyone involved in bringing me here.

“I can’t wait to get started now and keep speaking on the pitch.”
